This is the photography tour of the season. Over three days and two nights, immerse yourself in the wild beauty of Mt Field National Park during the peak of Tasmania’s famed fungi and fagus season. With Mt Field Retreats fully booked exclusively for our group, you’ll enjoy the perfect balance of comfort, creativity, and connection.

From the golden hues of Australia’s only deciduous beech (fagus) glowing on alpine ridges to forest floors alive with extraordinary fungi. Mt Field sets the stage for an unforgettable photography journey. Sunrise and sunset shoots among the fagus, daytime macro and focus-stacking sessions in lush rainforest and hands-on editing workshops ensure you capture this spectacular season at its very best.

Guiding you through it all are Tasmania’s leading fungi and landscape photography experts Tim Grimsey, Ben Wilkinson, Francois Fourie, and Geraldina Dijkstra - each bringing years of experience, local knowledge, and creative insight. With two instructors dedicated to support small groups of six, you will receive loads of one on one time to support your learning.

Your guides for this unforgettable experience are four of Tasmania’s most passionate and skilled photographers.

Tim Grimsey @timfromtasmania is Tasmania’s leading fungi photographer, known for his remarkable eye in uncovering and capturing the hidden beauty of the forest floor. His field knowledge and creative techniques make him the perfect guide into the world of fungi.

Ben Wilkinson @wilkography_tasmania founder of Tasmanian Photography Tours, brings over a decade of experience teaching photography and a deep love for Tasmania’s landscapes. His approachable teaching style and ability to balance technical knowledge with creative inspiration make him a favourite among students.

Francois Fourie @ffourie is a seasoned Tasmanian landscape photographer whose adventurous spirit has taken him to some of the wildest corners of the state. He’s known for his ability to combine storytelling and technical precision to create truly striking imagery.

Geraldina Dijkstra @geraldinainthewild brings a fresh, creative perspective with a talent for finding unique compositions in both grand landscapes and delicate details. Her supportive, hands-on approach ensures every participant feels encouraged and inspired.

Your Accommodation - Mt Field Retreat

Situated on the doorstep of stunning Mt Field National Park, Mt Field Retreat is the perfect location for you to immerse yourself in nature during this amazing photography experience.

Boasting 12 stunning self contained pods that are well appointed, comfortable and ooze personality. The one bedroom pods feature a king bed (can be split twin) in each bedroom, sofa bed in the lounge, a kitchenette with stove top and dishwasher and bathroom with shower that is inspiring on its own.

Landscaped with endemic tree ferns (including Geoffrey, the 14ft tall fern). Spot a platypus in the Tyenna River, see the endangered eastern quolls or eastern barred bandicoots scuttle through the undergrowth and be amazed as the white-bellied sea eagle soar above you.

What You Will Learn

Our fungi workshops will teach you:

  • Methods and habits for successful fungi finding
  • Various approaches to photographing small subjects with the gear that you have as well as dedicated macro equipment
  • Macro and close up photography specific camera settings, and how they may differ from other photography styles
  • Demystifying focus stack capturing and post processing
  • Making the most of your mushie with composition and lighting (both natural and artificial)

Our fagus workshops will teach you:

  • How to locate and identify fagus stands within Mt Field National Park
  • Techniques for capturing the golden autumn glow of Tasmania’s only deciduous tree
  • Landscape and intimate detail approaches to shooting fagus in changing light
  • Creative use of composition, colour, and perspective to make your images stand out
  • Post-processing tips to enhance the rich colours and textures of fagus leaves

  • Fully charged camera battery (and spares if you have them)
  • Memory card(s)
  • Lenses – If you need advice we will guide you 
  • Tripod – a must
  • Remote release – if you have one
  • Circular polariser – if you have one
  • Speedlight – if you have one
  • Good footwear
  • Sturdy, warm clothing
