Over three days and two nights, immerse yourself in the wild beauty of Mt Field National Park during the peak of Tasmania’s famed fungi and fagus season. With Mt Field Retreat booked for our group, you’ll enjoy a balance of comfort, creativity and connection.
From the golden hues of Australia’s only deciduous beech (fagus) to forest floors alive with extraordinary fungi, Mt Field sets the stage for an unforgettable photography journey. Sunrise and sunset shoots among the fagus, daytime macro and focus-stacking sessions in lush rainforest and hands-on editing workshops ensure you capture this spectacular season at its very best.
Guiding you through it all are Tasmania’s leading fungi and landscape photography experts Tim Grimsey and Francois Fourie - each bringing years of experience, local knowledge, and creative insight. With two instructors dedicated to supporting small groups of six, you will receive loads of one-on-one time as you learn.

What Happens On Tour?
Fungi and Fagus runs differently to our other tours. Most of our time is spent under the forest canopy where the light stays workable all day, so we are not tied to sunrise and sunset the way a coastal tour is. We still keep the days flexible, because the fungi and the fagus do what the season tells them to, not what a schedule says.
Day 1
We start in the classroom. Macro is technical, and getting the fundamentals right on the first day means the next two are spent shooting rather than troubleshooting. Focus stacking, depth of field, composition at close range, reading light on the forest floor and how to actually use a focus rail.
The afternoon is spent finding the first of the fungi and putting your learnings into practice.
Day 2
A full day in the forest, in one of our favourite locations. This is where the technique starts to become instinct. You have the time to work slowly, try things and build up enough files for the evening’s editing session.
Lunch on the banks of the Styx River, another session through the afternoon, then back to Mt Field for dinner and editing.
Day 3
An early start for the fagus, the one morning where light does matter. This is your chance at the turning colour that brings people to Tasmania in autumn. Back to Mt Field for lunch, then a final fungi session where everything from the previous two days comes together, before we make our way back to Hobart.
What We Teach
We teach the person, not the group. That is what six guests and two instructors buys you. Complete beginners and experienced photographers both come on these tours. Tell us where you are and we will meet you there.

Methods and habits for successful fungi finding
Various approaches to photographing small subjects with the gear that you have as well as dedicated macro equipment
Macro and close-up photography specific camera settings, and how they may differ from other photography styles
Demystifying focus stack capturing and post-processing
Making the most of your mushie with composition and lighting (both natural and artificial)
Our fagus workshops will teach you:
How to locate and identify fagus stands within Mt Field National Park
Techniques for capturing the golden autumn glow of Tasmania’s only deciduous tree
Landscape and intimate detail approaches to shooting fagus in changing light
Creative use of composition, colour, and perspective to make your images stand out
Post-processing tips to enhance the rich colours and textures of fagus leaves
Learn to shape
Half the image is made after the shutter. We show you how, step by step.
Processing RAW files in Lightroom and Photoshop
Building an edit that looks like yours rather than a preset
Reviewing your own images honestly and knowing which ones are working

Two of Tasmania’s most passionate and skilled fungi photographers will be your hosts and instructors on this photography tour.

Tim is one of Tasmania’s leading fungi photographers, known for his remarkable eye in uncovering and capturing the hidden beauty of the forest floor. His field knowledge and creative techniques make him a highly qualified instructor to help you nail those fungi focus stacks and beautiful compositions.
Francois Fourie @ffourie
A seasoned Tasmanian photographer whose adventurous spirit has taken him to some of the wildest corners of the state. Francois’ approach to lighting and creating moody fungi images always gets a few oohs and ahhs from people who learn new ways of turning those ‘flat’ images into something moody and mystical.
Together, Tim and Francois offer a wonderful balance of expertise, guidance, and technical knowledge to take your fungi photography to the next level.
Your Accommodation
Situated on the doorstep of Mt Field National Park, Mt Field Retreat is the perfect location for you to immerse yourself in nature during this tour.
The self-contained pods are well appointed, comfortable and ooze personality. The one-bedroom pods feature a king bed (can be split twin) in each bedroom, sofa bed in the lounge, a kitchenette with stove-top and dishwasher and bathroom with shower that is inspiring on its own.
Towering endemic tree ferns rise from the forest floor, including Geoffrey, our remarkable 14-foot fern. Along the Tyenna River, there’s a chance to spot a platypus, while eastern quolls and endangered eastern barred bandicoots move quietly through the undergrowth.

Departure and Return - The tour departs from and returns to the Old Woolstore Hotel, 11/1 Macquarie Street, Hobart City. Departure is 7am on Friday 30 April 2027, returning around 4pm on Sunday 2 May 2027.

Payment Terms - A deposit of A$500 is required to secure your booking. Once received, we will email you an invoice for the full tour amount. The remaining balance must be paid no later than 60 days before the tour’s start date. By booking you acknowledge and accept our Terms and Conditions

Who is this tour suited to?
Photographers of all skill levels, especially people who love fungi and macro photography.
What are the fitness / mobility requirements?
This tour involves a low to moderate level of fitness. Participants should be comfortable with short walks to shooting locations, including walking by head torch before sunrise or after dark. Some locations are accessed via slippery rainforest trails, unsealed paths, steps, and gentle inclines, and conditions may be cold and/or wet.
Do I get my own room?
Every guest is allocated their own private room. Twin share available upon request.
What are the group sizes?
Unless advertised, each group is kept to a maximum of 6 guests and 2 instructors.
Can you cater for dietary requirements?
Yes. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and most allergies can be catered for. Tell us when you book so we have time to prepare. If you have a severe allergy, let us know early and we will confirm exactly what is possible before you pay your balance.
