Step into the universe with Tasmanian Stargazer— Lisa Bromfield. Join us for a magical 2.5-hour night-sky experience at the historic Mt Pleasant Observatory in Cambridge. Perfect for curious explorers, families, and photography enthusiasts, this guided tour blends astronomy, storytelling, and hands-on learning.
Tasmania is internationally recognised for its exceptionally dark night skies, thanks to very low light pollution, clean air, and vast stretches of untouched wilderness. On a clear night, visitors can see:
- The Milky Way glowing bright overhead
- Thousands more stars than you’d ever see in major cities
- Famous southern-hemisphere constellations
- The Magellanic Clouds — two small satellite galaxies
- And occasionally, the magical Aurora Australis
What’s Included
Your evening begins with a warm welcome from our night-sky expert, Lisa Bromfield who will guide you through the constellations, planets, and deep-sky objects visible above the observatory. You’ll view the night sky through multiple telescopes, each offering a different perspective— a true bucket-list moment for any traveller.
Photography lovers can also capture stunning images of the night sky using the observatory’s large telescope as a dramatic backdrop. It’s an iconic photo you’ll want to share.
To keep you comfortable throughout the tour, we provide light catering, creating a relaxing, friendly atmosphere under the stars.

Meet Your Host - @tasmanianstargazer - Lisa Bromfield
I have always been fascinated by the night sky and the stars. One of my fondest memories is as a child, spending what felt like hours outside searching for Halley’s Comet—sadly, with no success.
When COVID hit and we were all stuck inside, I took the opportunity to start looking up. I began my astrophotography journey looking for comets with a DSLR and a tripod, capturing the wonders of the universe from my backyard.
What started as a curiosity quickly became a passion, and over time I invested in more advanced equipment and learned new techniques to improve my images. Not content with widefield shots – I wanted more, to go deeper into space.
Astrophotography is no longer a niche hobby – there is huge interest from the public and it has become more accessible than ever. While the learning curve can be
steep, I know that perseverance pays off. I too spent many frustrating nights outside in the cold Tasmania winter, struggling with techniques such as proper polar
alignment, but those challenges led to some of my most rewarding moments.
Today, I live on Hobart’s Eastern shore with my husband, two teenagers, two dogs and a cat and I feel extremely lucky to have an observatory with a dedicated deep sky setup, allowing me to make the most of Tasmania’s stunning night skies.
My work has been featured in magazines and online, and I’ve even sold a few images along the way. Through my journey, I’ve learned that every astronomer, whether
beginner or experience, has something to share. Astrophotography has become more than just a hobby—it’s a passion that continues to challenge and inspire me.
